The software purchased at the educational discount is the full, commercial version of the software -- it isn't a scaled down version, and it isn't missing any features. It is exactly the same software that one might purchase at full price anywhere.
There are two conditions: a licensing condition that it will be used for personal, educational purposes, not commercial use, and buying it at the educational price doesn't qualify you to get a reduced price on a future version/upgrade since you didn't pay the full price on the version you have.
If an upgrade or a new version is released and you really want it, you can buy the educational version of the upgrade/new release, rather than the full-priced, commercial version, so you end up with savings anyway.
